Listed as a weed in more than 46 states, mullein has adapted well to New Mexico’s high altitude and dusty-dry soil and is a regular fixture in fields and gardens alike, season after season.
On its second year, mullein will bloom, sending up a single, velvety shoot up to six feet tall that produces little yellow flowers. It is one of the first plants to blanket the forest floor after a fire, quickly covering the scars with its leaves.
Historically, mullein has been used as a remedy for the respiratory tract, urinary tract infections (UTIs) & earaches.
